Central Maine Brittany Club 2014 Specialty

The 2014 Central Maine Brittany Club Designated Specialty Show was once again held at the fairgrounds in Cumberland, Maine. As part of Maine’s Chickadee Classic four day cluster our Brittany entries remained consistent over the weekend for a four point major in bitches on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday morning started with complimentary snacks and beverages set up in a grooming area reserved exclusively for Brittany exhibitors. This set up is so convenient. It is directly across from our usual “Ring 4” just steps away and includes free electricity and nearby water hookup. A spacious hospitality area with tables and chairs was set up under the big CMBC tent for exhibitors to visit and relax and enjoy the complimentary sandwich bar. Another tent was set up with several tables full of promotional items and raffle prizes. Once again we were given a generous and expansive parking area just for Brittany exhibitors lending to a true sense of community.

I tried listing each individual who helped in some way to make this year’s show a success but I did not want to take the chance to overlook anybody. Early in the year CMBC members began to send monetary donations to help offset the price of trophy prizes which were noted in the official catalogue. There were those who came to the show site to help with set up before the cluster began. On the day of the show itself, several members came to the show site early for the sole purpose of helping out. They arrived all ready to oversee and assist with preparation of our food and hospitality area, the annual raffle, donations of desert and salads, photography, trophy distribution and more. These folks are the ones who made themselves available to help wherever it was needed right up until the final chair was loaded back into the club trailer. Thank you a million times over. Your help was especially appreciated because as most folks around here know, I had a total knee replacement this spring. Although successful with pre-show tasks at home, when I landed at the show site several CMBC members were standing by to help bring them to completion. As anyone coordinating an event is well aware, every hand willing to help is so greatly appreciated.

With spectacular weather for the first day of summer in Maine our Sweepstakes entries were judged by Mr. Jay Kitchener from Ogunquit, Maine. A total of five lovely Brittanys were presented to him. Our judge for regular classes was Mr. Roger Hartinger from Cincinnati, Ohio with an entry of 25 Brittanys. (A special note is made to say that thanks to Mr. Kitchener and Mr. Hartinger sevenyear-old Miss Alana Day had a very positive and enjoyable experience for her first time in the ring showing her grandparents’ six-month-old puppy)! It truly was an impressive line of Brittanys from the youngest and inexperienced to the wellseasoned show dog. The spectators sat ringside cheering and applauding as Mr. Hartinger put each class through the paces. CMBC club members were especially delighted to see Phil and Sherri Thayer’s Birch Spring PC Lunar Eclipse JH finish her championship title by going Best of Winners at the hands of Joyce Coccia. This makes the lovely liver and white Luna CMBC’s most recent show champion owned by members. Fifteen-month-old Kinships Triumphant Pursuit made his breeder/owner/handler Kim Hatton very proud and happy. “Myles” not only won Best in Sweepstakes but went on to win Best Bred-By-Exhibitor, Winners Dog, Best of Winners for a four point major, and last but not least earned a Bred-By-Exhibitor Group 2 placement. Way to show! As far as breed pride goes it’s always exciting to see the Best of Breed Brittany go on to earn a Group placement at a Designated Specialty Show. Even more so when it wins Group 1. Such was the case in Maine this year and not only that, many of us gathered ringside and watch GCH Triumphants As Good As It Gets JH (Beckett) win an impressive Reserve Best In Show!

I’ve had the pleasure of serving CMBC as third Vice President of Shows for six years now. Four of these years our designated specialty has been held at the Cumberland Fairgrounds in Cumberland, Maine with Penobscot Valley Kennel Club as our host. Additionally, the Lewiston-Auburn Kennel Club has worked alongside of them to provide a positive experience for Brittany exhibitors. Having said this, it is our pleasure to confirm indeed that Central Maine Brittany Club will welcome the 2015 American Brittany Club Summer Specialty to the beautiful rocky coast of Maine where lighthouses and lobsters abound. Mark your calendars now for Maine’s four day Chickadee Classic from June 18 through 21, 2015.

Respectfully Submitted, Ann H. Short
