Central Maine Brittany Club 2012 Specialty

The Central Maine Brittany Club held its annual Designated specialty show on Saturday, June 23, 2012 in conjunction with the second annual Maine Chickadee Classic, a four day cluster at the Cumberland Fairgrounds in Cumberland, Maine. With a total of 97 Brittany entries over the four day cluster there were majors three of the four days! This year the Specialty itself drew 29 regular entries and 11 Sweeps. The Supported entry drew 29 regular entries.

The location is just perfect for those wanting to kick their summer off exploring the nearby coast of Maine which several exhibitors and their family did. This is our third year with our host, The Penobscot Valley Kennel Club. Each year they do their best to accommodate our Specialty along with the Lewiston-Auburn Kennel Club, second club of the Maine Chickadee Classic cluster.

Experiencing an unusually early heat wave in Maine, temps were in the 90s with high humidity the first two days of the cluster. CMBC kept its large club tent up for all four days not only for reserved grooming but also to provide shelter and shade. On Saturday, an additional smaller hospitality tent contained a generous ringside buffet, several vendor items, a raffle table, and a small area for socializing. There was an expanded parking area on either side of the infamous log barrier and free electricity for all Brittany exhibitors. This year facilities were easily located nearby.

I hesitate to offer specific shout outs to individuals in fear of leaving someone out. Even so, CMBC club member Stephanie Stepanian should be recognized for successfully overseeing the hospitality area and all that entails. Much preparation goes on prior to the show itself but it is truly awesome to arrive at the grounds to find Stephanie, with her great smile and attitude, already there and waiting to organize the set up.

CMBC once again offered a ‘sandwich bar’ where exhibitors made their own deli sandwiches and provided ice cold beverages as well. CMBC member and director Julie Harris was surprised by the presentation of a special cake shared by all in celebration of her Brittany (Bullet) who had finished his AKC Championship during the cluster. Donations of raffle prizes, appetizers, fruit, snacks, desserts and more were appreciated. Another shout out to new CMBC members Larry and Lisa Ketner who set their entire Sunday aside to assist taking down the grooming tent and hospitality area. Overall, I am truly thankful for the members of CMBC, each officer and director for their support. As Show VP, I will enjoy the opportunity to give a great big hearty shout out to my husband John, club president, who truly gives life and feet to the plans I make and always gives 110% to the success of the show.

This year CMBC conducted two separate raffles. The drawing for the first raffle was held on Saturday during the Specialty. Donations included $100.00 worth of product from Pet Life Stores, a beautiful handcrafted leather kangaroo lead by Dawn Hill (Hills Brittanys), English Slip Leads with CMBC Logo, and more. The second raffle was supported entirely by Cabelas of Scarborough, Maine. Cabelas donated a dog containment system of invisible fencing (won by the Turners in Connecticut), a sporting dog first aid kit (won by the Jackson’s), a professional food grinder (won by J. Harris). Gun Dog Supply also donated several gift certificates to CMBC. Pet Works of Maine donated items for the hospitality goodie bags which next year will be packaged separately!

Traveling to Maine brings with it thoughts of our states best known delicacy – Maine Lobster. Rumor has it that certain folks from New Jersey may just have located the very best places near the fairgrounds to enjoy a Maine lobster dinner. All things considered, CMBC may just have to entertain the thought of a much later Brittany ring time in 2013 with hopes of enticing even more exhibitors with the suggestion of a Maine lobster dinner to enjoy in the early evening on the grounds. Stay tuned!

Speaking of New Jersey, there is one more shout out definitely worth mentioning. Miss Melissa McCloskey from N.J. and her Brittany “Val” won Best 40 Junior Handler on both Saturday and Sunday, congratulations! Thank you to all the exhibitors and their beautiful Brittanys who attended and who contributed to the success of this year’s show. The official results follow with congratulations to all winners. Dates for the 2013 Maine Chickadee Classic are June 20-June 23, 2013.

Respectfully Submitted, Ann H. Short, 3rd Vice President of Shows
